6. In the new year week of 1814, the prussian field marshal and supreme commander of the Silesian army, crossed the Rhine with 50.000 soldiers, 1.500 horses and 182 cannons, by aid of a russian ponton bridge, which used the "Pfalz" island as a connection between the two banks. The aim was to persue Napoeons' army back into France. This Rhine crossing is the main theme of the museum. The museum rooms are the former living quarters of Blücher and have retained their original charakter. They are furnished in "Empire" style and even the wallpaper has survided. This is a unique collection of the history of civilisation. One show are personal belongings of Blücher, only to be found here, and portraits and biographies at his Russian and Prussian generals. This exibition is completed by a tin-soldier diorama which brings the dramatic historical event back to life. The visitor has a general impression of the Silesian army through various illustrations, maps and pictures. The military collection dated from 1813 and the napoleonic era are of European standard. In this way the Blücher-Museum, with its extensive and comprehensive collections, offers the visitor an insight and understanding of the important historical events of 1813 and the german "Liberation Wars" 1813-15. |
